Life Story / Obituary
Betty Werner of Alpena died Monday December 5, 2011 at Alpena Regional Medical Center.
Betty was born September 6, 1926 in Petoskey to William H. and Nora L. (Dennis) Smith and moved with her family to Alpena on her 16th birthday. She graduated from Central Michigan University and on July 18, 1950 married Melbourne “Mickey” Werner at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Alpena. He preceded her in death on October 18, 1985. Betty and Mickey were the owners of Werner Appliance in Alpena for many years. She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church and had been active in numerous community organizations. She enjoyed traveling, visiting many different locations throughout the world, but loved when she could visit her son in New Zealand. Her highest priority was her family and spending time with them.
Surviving are her five children; Martin (Sheryn) Werner of Auckland, New Zealand, Dennis (Debbie) Werner, Andrea (Steve) Dutcher, John (Sylvia) Werner all of Alpena, Mary (Peter) Graham of East Lansing, 12 grandchildren; Owen (May), Ryan, Matt, Chris (Sarah), Emily, Kyle, Kate (Jason), Erica (Shawn), Spence, Sarah, Andrew, John, five great-grandchildren, her sister, Mary Lou (Philip) Davison of Alpena, her brother, Glen (Arlene) Smith of Gaylord, and her sister-in-law, Norma Smith of Alpena. She was preceded in death by a brother, William D. Smith.
Betty Werner is at McWilliams Funeral Home – Alpena where friends may call on Thursday from 2:00-8:00 pm and on Friday December 9, 2011 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Alpena from 10:00 am until the time of the funeral service at 11:00 am with Rev. Tom Orth officiating. Interment will be at Evergreen Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church, the Salvation Army or Alpena Regional Medical Center Development Fund.
