Passed away peacefully with his family by his side, April 4, 2016. He was born in Dyersburg, TN on September 26, 1925, to the late Henry and Mandy (Simpson) Powers. Vernon served in Europe during WW II and was a proud veteran. He married Bernice Zukowski on August 16, 1945 in Grand Rapids. Vernon loved the outdoors, gardening, telling stories and cheering the Detroit Tigers. He was friendly and well liked by all who knew him. Vernon is survived by his wife of seventy years; his son, Daniel (Marcia) Powers of Grand Rapids; grandchildren, Melissa Powers, Joshua (Rebecca) Powers, and Daniel (Jodi) Powers; great grandchildren, Taylor, Avery, Livia, Devon, Cooper and Hayleigh. Also surving are his sisters, Hazel Anderson and Helen Brown; and many nieces and nephews. He was proceeded in death by several brothers and sisters. Friends may visit on Thursday, April 7th, from 12-1 PM at the Heritage Life Story Funeral Home, Alt & Shawmut Chapel, 2120 Lake Michigan Drive NW. A funeral with full military honors will begin at 1:00 PM. Private burial will take place at Floral View Memorial Gardens.
