Thomas "Tom" Barton, age 56 of Hastings, tragically died in an automobile accident on January 15, 2019. Tom was born May 24, 1962, in Kalamazoo, the son of Harry and Marge (Cothran) Barton, who preceded him in death. He was a graduate of Portage Northern High School and attended Ferris State College. It was at college that he met Sheila Smith, and they shared 33 wonderful years of marriage. Tom had retired from Mid-State Security as a Fire Alarm and Security System Designer. His time spent as a coach for baseball and football at Battle Creek St. Phillips and Delton-Kellogg Schools, were some of his best memories. Tom was the light in any room he entered, with his humor and kind and gentle way. He left laughter everywhere he went and touched many hearts because of it. For the last few years he had been a regular at Snap Fitness in Hastings. He was an avid Detroit Lions fan. Above all, he loved his time with his wife Sheila Barton and his son Harry (Michelle Walker) Barton. As a family they went on camping trips to Lake Leelanau for over 20 years. Sheila and Tom cherished time together, playing pickleball, walking, riding bikes, or just a moment together at home. Harry and Tom had a special friendship, bonding over sports, the outdoors, and funny movies. A Celebration of Life gathering will be Monday, January 21, 2019 from 3-5 PM at the Pierce Cedar Creek Institute, 701 W. Cloverdale Road, Hastings. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be directed to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Please visit Tom's webpage for an online guest book or to leave a condolence. www.langelands.com
