Thomas George Steinmann, age 56, of Traverse City, passed away Sunday morning, January 19, 2014, succumbing to liver cancer.

Thom was born August 29, 1957, in Elgin, IL to Walter Frederick Steinmann and Mary Lucille (Spurling) Snow.

He was preceded in death by both parents, and one step-parent, Carolyn Steinmann, in 2012.

A 40-year resident of the Grand Traverse area, Thom was dearly loved by family and friends and was affectionately known as "GreyPaw" by his grandkids. He will be greatly missed.

He is survived by one son, Eddie Phillips, and partner Amber Pelton, and grandchildren Paige and Olivia; and by two daughters; Nichole Steinmann and partner Brett Scholten, with grandchildren Kaylanuh and Rylan, all of Traverse City; a second daughter, Stephanie Steinmann and grandchildren, Quinton Thomas Van Port Fleet of Phoenix, AZ.

Thom is also survived by five brothers and two sisters; Gary and Mary Jo Steinmann of Elgin, IL, Michael Steinmann, and partner JoAnne Tyler of Myrtle Beach, SC, Steve and Dawn Steinmann of Marengo, IL, Keith Steinmann of Davenport, IA and Jeff Snow of Lake in the Hills, IL; sisters Susan Burr of Isonville, KY and Diane Slone of Monticello, KY.

He is also survived by his ex-wife of 13 years, Debra Merriner, of Traverse City.

Thom was employed for 35 years in the local construction business, with Paul Maurer Contracting for the past 20 years and with Zimmerman Construction before that.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make donations to the family on behalf of Thom, to help us defray legal, medical and personal expenses. We greatly appreciate your generosity.

Memorial Services will be held 1pm, Friday, January 24, 2014 at the Life Story Funeral Home, Traverse City; where the family will greet friends starting at noon.
