Thomas Newhouse

Age 76, passed away on Tuesday, August 14, 2018, at Bronson Hospital. He was born in Kalamazoo, MI on November 4, 1941, a son of Harold and Jeanette (Hoogendoorn) Newhouse. Tom graduated from what was then Portage Township High School, Class of 1960 and then attended classes at Western Michigan University. On August 9, 1963 Tom entered the US Air Force and was honorably discharged on August 3, 1967 with the rank of SSGT. He returned to Kalamazoo in 1967, and soon began his employment at The Upjohn Company and retired in 1998. Tom was a member of Lakeland Reformed Church where he served in the Consistory and enjoyed volunteering to help maintain the facilities. Every year he and his family would travel to the annual Mackinac Bridge Walk and then spend time exploring Michigan lighthouses. He was a lifelong Detroit Tigers and Lions fan. When time and health permitted, Tom was an avid golfer. On September 1, 1962, Tom married the former Margaret "Peggy" Hastings, who survives. Also surviving are three children, Greg (Wendy) Newhouse of Kalamazoo, Karen J. Newhouse of Baltimore, MD and Amy (Norm Barnard) Newhouse of Portage; four grandchildren, Meaghan and Hannah Newhouse (Greg) as well as Annika and Keegan Russell (Amy); two brothers, John A. (Sue) Newhouse of England and James S. (Irene) Newhouse of Kihei, HI; a sister, Jean (Eric) Durham of Ada, MI; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Cremation has taken place. Inurnment with military honors will be held 10 a.m. on Friday, September 28th in Ft. Custer National Cemetery. Those wishing to attend should be in the cemetery assembly area by 9:45 a.m. A memorial visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, September 28th in the fellowship hall of Lakeland Reformed Church, 10422 Sprinkle Rd., where a memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 29th, with Rev. Ed Schmidt officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Lakeland Reformed Church (Newhouse Memorial Fund).
