Thelma was born September 11, 1930, in Kalamazoo, the daughter of the late Emil A. and Esther (Schulz) Geissel, Sr. and passed away April 3, 2018 with family by her side. She was united in marriage on May 14, 1949 to Harold R. Lanphear. She was a lifelong Kalamazoo area resident and member of Zion Lutheran Church. She worked as a library clerk in the Kalamazoo Public Schools for many years until her retirement and enjoyed gardening and reading. She is survived by four of her children: Stephen (Betteann) Lanphear, Vicki Warner, Paul (Mary) Lanphear, and Edward (Gail) Lanphear; six grandchildren: Jon (Connie) Gensemer, Amy Figel, Kelly (Randy) Baird, Rebecca (Desi) McCoy-Fischer, Alex Lanphear and Aaron Lanphear; great-grandson: Gavin Baird; sister: Doris Stermer; brother: George (Roberta) Geissel; and several nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death were her husband of over 60 years: Harold Lanphear; son: Gary Lanphear; granddaughter: Christina Lanphear; brother: Emil Geissel Jr.; sisters: Marie Dowd and Lois Rey; and sons-in-law: Matthew McCoy and Duane Warner. Visitation will be from 2-5 PM on Sunday, April 8, at Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Memorial Chapel, 622 S. Burdick Street. A funeral service to celebrate Thelma's life will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, April 9, at Zion Lutheran Church, 2122 Bronson Blvd. Interment will follow the church luncheon in Mt. Ever-Rest Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Alzheimer's Association, American Heart Association or Loaves and Fishes Food Pantry.
