Sylvia went to Jesus on Tuesday afternoon, May 22, 2018 at New Friends in Kalamazoo. She was born on May 29, 1938 in Muskegon Heights, MI, the daughter of the late John and Mary Doom. Sylvia graduated with high honors from Michigan State University with a Bachelor's Degree in Education. She worked as a 5th grade teacher for Gobles Public School for many years until her retirement. Sylvia was a devout Christian and an active member of Faith Reformed Church, until their closing, when she joined Southridge Reformed Church. She loved being on the water and spent much time enjoying Lake Michigan whenever she got the chance and was an avid Detroit Tigers fan. Surviving are her husband of 7 years: Max Matson; two children: Cameron Sikkenga and Kyle (Tom) Proksch; five step-children: Polly (Scott) Blowers, Troy (Laura) Matson, Lori Matson, Juli Matson, and Jodi (Bud Turner) Matson; grandchildren: Collin, Caleb and Krista Proksch; step-grandchildren: Beverly (Scott) Watts and Hayden and Olivia Blowers; step-great-granddaughter: Elizabeth Watts; sister: Mary Nell Deyo; brother: Chester (Donna) Doom; former spouse: Robert (Mary Ann) Sikkenga and several nieces and nephews and extended family. Preceding her in death were her husband of 14 years; Bruce Bowerman; and step-son: Jeff Matson. Visitation will be from 5-7 PM on Thursday, May 24, at Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Portage Chapel, 411 E. Centre Ave. A service to celebrate Sylvia's life will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, May 25, at The Bridge, 7200 Angling Road. Pastor Scott Blowers will officiate. Following the church luncheon, interment will be in Hope Cemetery, Texas Corners. Memorial contributions may be directed to Alzheimer's Association.
