Shirley Maywood

Shirley A. Maywood, age 86, of Decatur, MI passed away peacefully Monday December 5, 2016 at home with her family by her side. Shirley was born September 26, 1930 in Mishawaka, IN the daughter of Arthur and Ruby (Simpson) Culver. Shirley was an adventurous and special lady who touched the hearts and lives of many and will be greatly missed by all. She retired from Knouse Foods in Paw Paw, MI. Shirley enjoyed cooking, canning, bingo, casinos, and especially gatherings with family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, John Maywood; sisters, Sharon Craft and Mary Rouse; grand-daughter Tara Sperry; and grandson, Blaine Newcomb. Surviving are her children, Ken (Dee) Lapekas of Kalamazoo, Carl Lapekas of Bloomingdale, Rob Sperry, Doris (Ed) Burr all of Paw Paw; brothers, Arthur Culver of Terra Haute, IN, Walter Culver of Kalamazoo; sisters, Gladys Gillespie of Hillsboro, AL, Delores Tipton of Grand Rapids; special foster daughter, Cathy Whitaker; special long-time friends, Louis Buiskool and Sharon Rehn of Decatur; 7 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren, 4 great-great grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, cousins; and one uncle, Ralph Simpson. Friends may meet the family from 10-11:00am Saturday, December 10 at the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Westside Chapel, 3926 South 9th Street, where services will follow at 11:00am. Interment will be in Mt. Ever-Rest Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Alzheimer's Association or to Hospice Care of Southwest Michigan. The family would like to thank the wonderful in-home caregivers for the loving care they gave to Shirley.
