A bright light leaves us. Sheri Phelps went to be with her Lord on Wednesday, August 17, 2016 after a courageous 3 year journey with cancer. Sheri is survived by her husband Rick; 3 children, Cailynn, Maia and Isaac; parents, Bob and Jan Van Dyke; father-in-law, Wayne Phelps; brothers and sisters-in-law, Paul and Kristin Van Dyke, Patrick and Mary Phelps, Van and Sherry Pratt, Chris and Pam Phelps, Tony and Jane Lathrop; and grandmother, Geneva Van Dyke, as well as her aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by paternal grandfather, Aalbert Van Dyke, maternal grandparents John and Lenore Vander Kuyl and mother-in-law, Gwen Phelps. As a child, Sheri lived in Hamilton and attended Hamilton Schools until 10th grade when the family moved to Hudsonville. She graduated from Hudsonville High school in 1995 and went on to attend Cornerstone College and then Western Michigan University School of Music from which she graduated with a degree in music education. Upon graduation in 2001 she married Rick Phelps and began her work as a music teacher for Kalamazoo Public Schools and later her role as a mother. At an early age Sheri entered into a saving relationship with her Maker and Heavenly Father by trusting in Jesus Christ as her Savior. She maintained a strong Christian testimony all her life, never wavering in her faith or testimony. She was a skilled musician who loved to sing and play the piano, as well as several other instruments. Her summers for the past 16 years were spent at Camp Beechpoint, serving as Worship Director. Throughout the school year she and her husband, Rick, served as worship leaders at their church as well as being guest worship leaders at other churches. A memorial celebration of Sheri's life will be held at 11 a.m. on September 17th at the Overisel Reformed Church, 4706 142nd Ave, Holland, MI with Pastors Don Boss and Todd TerAvest officiating. In lieu of flowers, gifts can be made to a Michigan Education Savings Account set up in memory of Sheri for Cailynn, Maia and Isaac.
