Weed, Sheldon 7/7/1931 - 9/24/2016 Henderson, Nevada Sheldon Duane Weed of Gobles, MI and Henderson, NV at the age of 85 peacefully went home to be with his beloved wife, Doris Ann on September 24, 2016 after an extended battle with Alzheimer disease. Sheldon (known to his friends as Shelly) was born to Nathan and Hattie Weed (Fryling) on July 7, 1931. Sheldon attended Mattawan schools where he excelled at athletics. He was particularly well known as a "hard throwing" right handed pitcher and later went on to pitch successfully for the Upjohn Company during the "hay days" of the Kalamazoo men's league. Mattawan schools also proved to be the meeting grounds of Sheldon and Doris Ann Mumford which led to their eventual marriage on November 29, 1949 and lasted for 65 years until Doris passed on Feb 27, 2015. Sheldon was a loving and providing husband and father to his wife and three children as they spent many glorious days at their residence on the shores of North Lake in Gobles, MI. The Gobles community and school system played an important part in Sheldon's family's life as he filled the role of President of the Board of Education for many years and took great pride in presiding over numerous improvements and upgrades including new buildings and sports facilities. He spent many years as pitching coach on his son's baseball teams, playing a vital role in the teams success. Sheldon and Doris were parents of great spiritual faith. Sheldon demonstrated this by taking an active role serving as Deacon at the Gobles Presbyterian Church. Sheldon spent most of his adult life employed at the UpJohn Company where he worked as a valued employee from 1949-1984. Most of that time was spent in the now famous virology department on the 13th floor of the downtown building. Even after his retirement in 1984 the company asked him to work part time so he could carry on with the department's valuable work. After retirement, Sheldon and Doris loved to spend time together and particularly enjoyed their frequent trips to the south and west where they spent time away from the long cold Michigan winters. They eventually moved to Henderson, Nevada to live out the remainder of their retirement. Sheldon is survived by his sisters, Barb Whipple (Jerry), Linda Stozicki (Steve) and Lois Pease. Also surviving are his children Duane (Christine), Henderson NV, Pam Fett (Jim), Las Vegas NV, Timothy (Brenda) Allegan, MI and Daughter-in-Law Jackie Weed, Detroit MI. Grandchildren Katherine Debski (Matt), Jason Haaksma (Nikki), Meagan Haaksma (Robert Brown), Geoffrey Weed (Kristin), Amanda White (Nick), Amber Dickerson (Wes), Heather Rhodes (Brandon) and 14 great grandchildren. The memorial service is yet to be determined for Sheldon and Doris. Their ashes will be coming back to Texas Township Hope Cemetery sometime in the near future. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to breast cancer or Alzheimer research.
