Sharilyn Surine

urine, Sharilyn Lucy (Oliver) of Vicksburg Sharilyn, age 75, passed away on Friday, February 3, 2017, surrounded by the immense love of her family following a several-decade progression of a neurodegenerative condition. She was born on December 8, 1941 in Kalamazoo, the daughter of the late Myron and Emily (Emmons) Oliver. Sharilyn was raised in Kalamazoo, Michigan, and attended Western Michigan University. On August 21, 1965, Sharilyn was united in marriage to James E. Surine. She was a lifelong homemaker and doting wife and mother to her family, from which she derived great happiness. Sharilyn was a member of Lake Center Bible Church; an avid bookworm; lover of candles, crafts, and collectibles; and a sports fan. She always smiled and laughed in the face of adversity. Her positive demeanor and ability to give unconditional love will be remembered as two of her greatest qualities. Surviving are her husband of 51 years: Jim Surine; her four children: Kristi (Mark) Bast of Grand Rapids, Tim (Stephanie) Surine of Tiffin, Iowa, Jill (Matt) Haarman of Grand Rapids, and Steve (Jennifer) Surine of Portage; five grandsons: Brady, Samuel, Christopher, Perry, and Jack; two brothers: Tom (Sue) Oliver of Kalamazoo and Jim (Sue) Oliver of Lansing; and several nieces and nephews. The family extends a special thank-you to the devoted nursing and support staff at Medilodge of Portage where Sharilyn resided for nearly six years. A memorial service celebrating Sharilyn will be held at Oakwood Bible Church, 4100 Oakland Drive, Kalamazoo, on Saturday, February 18, 2017, with Pastor Gordon Daam officiating.
