Matthews, Scott P., III Of Portage, MI Scott Preston Matthews, III, passed away at Ascension Borgess Hospital on March 28, 2021. Scott was born April 18, 1935 in Allegan, MI, the son of Scott and Irene (Cheeks) Matthews, Jr. He was a graduate of Allegan High School and a lifelong area resident. During the Korean War, he served in the U.S. Army National Guard. For many years prior to his retirement, he worked as the Service Manager for several Ford Dealerships, including: Haggin Wimberley Ford in Battle Creek, Simmons Ford in Vicksburg, Rod Tyler Ford in Schoolcraft and Stoney's Ford in Gobles. He was a state certified Master Mechanic and still maintained an active mechanic's license even at the age of 85. Scott enjoyed going to antique shows and flea markets, woodworking, restoring old clocks, building wooden model ships, rock and coin collecting, photography, hunting and fishing. He was extremely mechanically minded and was able to repair or build anything whether it be related to carpentry, electrical or mechanical. He had a great sense of humor and loved to share stories from his past with others. On October 2, 1967, he was united in marriage to Linda (Farnum) Matthews, who preceded him in death on October 21, 2011. He was also preceded by his parents; his son Scott P. Matthews, IV; and his siblings: Mila Stoner, Betty Matthews, Geraldine Winegarten, Francis Shaw, Thomas Matthews. Surviving are his children: Cynthia (Bill) Farran, Kathy (Darrell) Fraaza, Julia (Daniel) Doran; grandchildren, Jamal and Malik Farran, Kristin (Matt) Covault, David (Cammy) Fraaza, Kyle (Kacie) Fraaza, Nicole (Eric) Szczembara and Sarah (Josh) Gower; brother Michael Matthews; several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. In accordance with his wishes, cremation has taken place. Private family services will be held to celebrate Scott's life. Scott and Linda will be buried together in Boughton Cemetery in Scotts, MI. In lieu of flowers, memorials in Scott's memory may be directed to American Diabetes Association, or American Heart Association.
