Ruth Charlene Renwick Richards, age 87, of Traverse City, died Wednesday, March 4, 2015 at Boardman Lake Glens in Traverse City, where she had been living for the past few months.

Ruth was born in the City of Highland Park in the County of Wayne, Michigan, on Aug. 15, 1927 the daughter of Charles Spencer and Coral (Bufe) Renwick.

Ruth lived in Pontiac, Rochester, Lakeville, Suttons Bay and Traverse City. She attended Western Michigan College and Michigan State University and received her Master of Arts in teaching, elementary education, from Oakland University (1979).

She taught elementary education at the Rochester Community Schools, Rochester, and was involved with and sat on the boards of numerous educational, banking and charitable organizations.

Ruth met her husband while washing dishes with the youth group at the All Saints Episcopal Church of Pontiac. She was a lifelong participant of the Christian Faith and a member of the University Presbyterian Church in Rochester, the First Congregational Church in Suttons Bay and most recently loved visiting with her new family at the First Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Grand Traverse.

Ruth loved to garden at her various homes and was an Advanced Master Gardener, participated in the Leelanau County/Suttons Bay Garden Club, volunteered at the Michigan State University Extension of Leelanau County and participated in many regional groups such as Quilters, Stitchers, Questers, etc.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband, George Elmer Richards.

She is survived by her brother, Charles Renwick, of Davidson, North Carolina; and her children, Charles George (Linda) Richards, of Tijeras, New Mexico, Holadia (Coralie), of Boulder, Colorado, Paul Allan (Janice) Richards, of Glen Lake, Bruce Barton Richards, of Traverse City, and Scott Andrew (Candace) Richards, of Napa, California; grandchildren, Alysa, Peter, John, Andrew, Raina, Madeline, Nathan, Dawn and George; and great-grandchildren.
