Russell Gustav Winquist passed away after a long and brave struggle with cancer. A WWII Navy veteran who served in the S. Pacific, he had just celebrated his 96th birthday with his loving family: devoted companion of 28 years, Donna Smith; son Stephen (wife Linda); and daughters Cheryl (husband Richard), Laurel (husband Wayne), and Ann. He is also survived by 7 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, and dozens of nephews and nieces, including Mike Sandberg and Heidi Beckman. Welcoming him in Heaven are many loved ones, most importantly his beloved wife Ann Kosowski Winquist, and sisters Mae and Laverne. Russell was born in St. Paul, Minnesota in 1925. He worked as a mechanical engineer at Parker Hannifin of Otsego, retiring in 1990. Russ kept busy with his favorite hobbies, including golf, woodworking and photography. After developing macular degeneration in the 1990's, Russ became almost totally blind. But he faced every day with a smile and a "can do" attitude, always willing to help others in any way he could. He loved listening to all types of music and would join in singing, and even if he didn't know all the words, he always knew the tune. We will miss his beautiful singing voice, his sweet smile and his generous heart. The family respectfully requests no flowers but would appreciate donations made in Russ' memory to Hospice Care of Southwest Michigan (hospiceswmi.org or 7100 Stadium Drive, Kalamazoo, MI 49007) or your favorite charity. A memorial service will be held 11am Friday September 10, 2021 at St. Catherine of Siena, 1150 W. Centre Ave., Portage, Michigan, with visitation with family one hour prior to the mass.
