Rodney R. Sweetland, Jr., age 80, of Scotts, MI passed away on Wednesday morning January 4, 2017. He was born on January 22, 1936, in Kalamazoo to the late Rodney R. Sweetland, Sr. and Margaret (Spaulding) Sweetland. He was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Suzanne M. (Cloney) Sweetland, and his brother, Richard Sweetland. He is survived by his son, Rodney R. Sweetland, III, and grandson, Rodney R. Sweetland, IV, both of Arlington, Virginia. He was a graduate of Kalamazoo Central High School and served in the peacetime U.S. Army, ultimately attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant in the Reserves. Rodney was an avid sportsman throughout his life, enjoying hunting, fishing, golfing and bowling. It was as a bowler that he achieved his greatest sporting success, once bowling a perfect 300 game. His only regret was that his tax dollars supported the University of Michigan rather than Notre Dame. A memorial gathering will be held at Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Portage Chapel, 411 E. Centre on Sunday, January 8, from 2-4pm. Private interment will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Rodney's memory may be made to Hospice Care of Southwest Michigan.
