Robin Barlow, age 81, of Augusta, MI passed peacefully at home on August 23 after a long illness. Robin was born in Blackburn, Lancashire and grew up in the south of England. He excelled in academics from an early age, and received a scholarship to Oxford University. At Oxford he met his future wife, Betsy Davis, a native of Kalamazoo. After college he served for two years in the British Army (2nd Lieutenant, Royal Corps of Signals). Robin then emigrated to the United States; he and Betsy were wed in 1957. Robin received an M.B.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Michigan and was appointed to the faculty in the Department of Economics. He taught at the U of M for 39 years and also held administrative positions, including Director of the Center for Research on Economic Development. Robin had a special interest in developing countries, and traveled extensively as a researcher and consultant, particularly in Africa. He spoke fluent French, and used this skill to further his international connections. Robin retirered in 2000 as Professor Emeritus from the School of Public Health. Robin was a fine amateur athlete. He enjoyed soccer, tennis, squash, and running. He was also a gifted actor, performing in 50 local theater productions, often in a leading role. Robin was a loving husband, devoted father, dedicated educator, and a kind and gracious man. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Phyllis Barlow, and his daughter Gwendolyn Barlow. He is survived by his wife Betsy, sister Rosemary Cross, children Jim Barlow, Jennifer Barlow (Ed Gibbs), Rebecca Barlow (Michael Cooper), grandchildren Michael, Gregory, and Andrew Barlow, Angus and Clyde Gibbs, Nell Barlow, Leo and Cully Cooper, and several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at St. Timothy's Episcopal Church in Richland MI at 4 p.m. on October 16. Robin was a remarkable man whose memory will be cherished.
