Dr. Robert Vermeulen, age 93, of Traverse City, MI passed away at Grand Traverse Pavillions in Traverse City MI on July 1, 2016. Robert was the son of Isaac and Kate (Powers) Vermeulen and was born on Nov 26, 1922 in Kalamazoo. He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years Anne (Hoppe) Vermeulen, and by his 2 brothers Isaac (Ester) Vermeulen and James (Sarah) Vermeulen, and 1 sister Alice Vermeulen. Robert served in the US Navy during WW2 in the South Pacific. Upon discharge he attended Western Michigan, Michigan State University and the University of Michigan. Robert was among the first of 2 PH.D recipients from the School of Education at WMU. He is survived by 2 children Nancy Anne (Daniel) Craig and Robert Eric (Beth) Vermeulen, 5 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. He served as a teacher and administrator in the Portage Public Schools in the 50s and 60s, and as a School Superintendent in the Upper Merion school district in suburban Philadelphia, as well as The Okemos Public Schools. He also served as an educational consultant and lobbyist for the Michigan Association of School Boards in Lansing. He and his wife were active in the Reformed and Presbyterian Churches, and spent many happy hours at their retirement home on Lake Leelanau near Traverse City. Robert will be buried next to his wife at Fort Custer National Cemetery after a brief graveside Ceremony officiated by Pastor Kevin Hart.
