Dick, age 77, died Thursday evening, October 31, 2019 at Ascension Borgess Hospital, Kalamazoo, MI following a long battle with cancer. Dick, the son of Gerald L. and Gladys G. (Young) Sherman, born in Flint, MI on September 18, 1942, was a 1960 graduate of Hoover High School of Flint, MI and moved to this area in 1965. He served his Country honorably and nobly in the United States Navy as a Field Medical Tech. Dick, also known as Sherm, retired in 1997 after 30 years of service to the Kellogg Company as a Chemist. He was a member of St Ann Catholic Church, in Augusta, and was active with the Gull Lake Community Volunteers. Dick had volunteered for a decade with the Gull Lake Area Ambulance Service, had been a Boy Scout Leader, a member of the Big Brothers & Big Sisters, and a 25-year Kellogg Club member. He was a craftsman when it came to woodworking and he loved fishing from his boat on Little Long Lake. His wish was to have one more summer on the lake and this wish was granted. The evening his heart stopped beating, it was Halloween night, and the first snow of the season fell. Dick was united in marriage to the former, Mary Margaret Bauer in Flint, on May 8, 1965. Surviving is his wife of 54 years, Mary, two daughters, Julia A Sherman of Richland, and Jean S. Norman of Waterford, his son, Jim (Cynthia) Sherman of Bloomfield Hills, six grandchildren (Emily, Delaney, Alyssa, Kiersten, Garrett, and Haley) and a sister, Rainelle (Greg) Matte of Ovid, MI. Dick's family will greet friends on Tuesday, November 6th from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Farley Estes Dowdle Funeral Home & Cremation Care, Richland Chapel, 9170 East D Avenue (M-89). Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, November 7th at 11:00 a.m. in St. Ann Catholic Church, 12648 East D Avenue, Augusta, MI 49012 with Monsignor Michael Hazard, Vicar General, Celebrant and Deacon Michael A. Carl, Assisting. Dick's life celebration will continue immediately following the Mass with a time of fellowship and a luncheon in the Church Social Hall. Interment will follow at 2:30 p.m. in Fort Custer National Cemetery, Augusta, with the United States Navy Honor Guard and the Fort Custer Honor Guard bestowing full military honors. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Dick's honor may be directed to The Wounded Warrior Project or your favorite cancer research organization.
