Richard John Goebel Sr., age 87 of Hickory Corners passed away peacefully on November 27, 2019 at his home. Richard was born on July 23, 1932 in Cheboygan the son of John and Julia (Goral) Goebel. A veteran, Dick proudly served on the USS Missouri during the Korean War. Dick earned his bachelor's degree from Michigan State University and his master's degree from Western Michigan University. He was a science teacher at Battle Creek Central for thirty years and was also chairman of the science department before retiring in 1987. Dick loved to mentor young people and never missed a "teaching moment." He was a member of Revive Bible Church where he served as a deacon for thirty five years. Dick was an avid outdoorsman and environmentalist, he loved catch and release trout fishing, trail riding, canoeing, and spending time at the family's cabin in Luther. He also enjoyed traveling including to Alaska and Hawaii, but his most memorable trip was with his sons on the Talons Out Honor Flight to Washington DC. Richard is survived by his wife of sixty three years, Nancy (Carmody) Goebel; sons: Richard Jr. (Mary) Goebel and Rod (Carol) Goebel; grandchildren: Erin Goebel, Patrick Goebel, and Kathryn (RJ) Wiersema; and several nieces and nephews. Dick was preceded in death by his parents and five siblings. Richard's family will receive friends on Sunday, 5:00 to 8:00 PM at Revive Bible Church, 12711 M-43 Highway, Delton where his funeral service will be conducted on Monday, December 2, 2019 at 12:00 Noon, Pastor Gary Fenlon officiating.
