Rhoda J. Brenton, age 99, of Peru, IN passed away at 3:25 P.M., Friday, November 18, 2016 at Community Howard Regional Health, Kokomo. She was born in Leslie, MI on May 3, 1917 the daughter of Manley and Bertha Christie Gilman. Rhoda married Philip M. Brenton on February 3, 1939 and he preceded her in death on December 29, 1958. Rhoda received her Bachler of Arts degree in Education from Michigan State University in 1961 and her Master of Arts in Education from Michigan State University in 1967. She taught kindergarten and first grade in the Jackson, MI school system her entire career and was affectional known to many kindergarden students as "Grandma". Rhoda was a lifelong scholar, the pillar of her family and a paragon to be emulated by others. She is survived by a daughter, Martha J. Pratt of Peru; grandchildren Philip Swan, Melissa Dwight, Fred Pratt, Jr., Roger Brenton, Jean Brenton and Jessica Christie; 5 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-granddaughter. She was preceded in death by a son, Larry Brenton, a daughter Joan Norat and a great-grandson, Jacob Dwight. Rhoda was laid to rest at 2:00 P.M., Tuesday, November 22, 2016 in Mt Hope Cemetery, Peru, IN. Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Eikenberry-Eddy Funeral Home, Peru, IN.
