Rev. John E. Young, 87, of South Haven, passed away Tuesday, November 26, 2019 at Upjohn Care and Rehabilitation Center in Kalamazoo. He was born May 29, 1932, in St. Paul, Minnesota, to Edward James and Alice (Barry) Young. Fr. John was Baptized and made his First Communion at Nativity Catholic Church in St. Paul, Minnesota. He was Confirmed at Immaculate Conception Church in Elmhurst, Illinois. Fr. John attended Sacred Heart Seminary in Detroit, St. John Provincial Seminary in Plymouth, and the University of Detroit in Detroit. Fr. John received a Master's degree in counseling. He was ordained as a Catholic priest for the Diocese of Lansing on June 1, 1957, by Bishop Joseph Albers. Fr. John served at Holy Redeemer in Flint from 1957-1959, St. Augustine in Kalamazoo from 1959-1964, St. Joseph in St. Johns from 1964-1966, St. John in Davison in 1966, St. Joseph in St. Joseph from 1967-1968, Pastor of St. Peter's in Eaton Rapids from 1968-1970, and St. John in Albion from 1970-1972. After the Diocese of Kalamazoo was created in July, 1971, Fr. John was incardinated to that Diocese. Then he served at Mercy College in Detroit from 1972-1975, St. Monica in Kalamazoo from 1975-1979, St. John Student Parish in East Lansing from 1979-1980, St. Ambrose in Parchment from 1980-1986, St. Monica in Kalamazoo from 1986-1990, and St. Basil in South Haven from 1990 until his retirement in 2007. Fr. John was the Director of Priestly Life and Ministry for the Kalamazoo Diocese from 1984-1991. He is preceded in death along with his parents by his brother, James "Chic" Young; sister, Mary Rose Daniel; brothers-in-law, Joseph Liebner, Robert Daniel, and William Jansen, and sister-in-law, Marian Young. Fr. John is survived by his sister - Joan Liebner Jansen, as well as several nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held at St. Basil Catholic Church in South Haven from 1-4:00 PM and 6-8 PM on Tuesday, December 3, 2019. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Basil Catholic Church at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, December 4, 2019, with Bishop Paul Bradley presiding. Fr. John will be laid to rest at St. John Catholic Cemetery in Jackson, Michigan, at 11:00 AM on Thursday, December 5, 2019. Contributions may be made in Fr.
