Died on Sunday, November 4, 2018, at his home, age 83. Raoul was born on September 26, 1935 in Erie, Pennsylvania, the son of the late Clarence J. Yochim and Beatrice (Scherrei) Yochim. He attended Cathedral Preparatory School where at age 15 he was awarded the Ford Foundation Scholarship to attend Yale University. After graduating from Yale in 1955 with a Bachelor of Arts, Raoul enlisted in the United States Navy where he served at Great Lakes Naval Base until 1959. He then entered law school at the University of Pennsylvania receiving his Juris Doctorate in 1963. On November 22, 1962, Raoul married Julie Van Eman, who preceded him in death on September 29, 1983. He then married Joann Betty Yochim on December 26, 1987. Raoul was a member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church. Raoul is survived by his loving wife, JoAnn Betty; five children, Dierk VanEman (Katrina Leach) Yochim, Peter Scherrei (Nikka) Yochim, Jonathan Kenneth Cox (Astra Woodcraft) Yochim, Elizabeth Anne Yochim and Joseph Aquilino Gonzalez; and three grandchildren Ena, Tova and Petra; a sister, Judith Krahe and a brother, Bruce Yochim. Raoul had a lifelong passion for literature, music, and the arts and was a consummate wordsmith. He was also an avid and accomplished sailor. The family would like to thank caregivers, Patricia Hokanson, Anthony Genna, and Jevestine Johnston. A private family gathering will be held at Glencoe Union Church in Glencoe, Illinois, at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given in his name to the Aphasia Program--WMU Department of Speech Language Hearing, 1903 W. Michigan, Kalamazoo, Michigan 49008.
