Phil Harlan Edie, age 89, of Portage, Michigan, passed away on November 11, 2017. Phil was born September 5, 1928 to Alexander and Laura Edie in Chicago, Illinois. Phil was raised in Macomb, Illinois which he called "home". Phil graduated from Western Illinois University in 1950. Served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. Married an air force nurse (Gladys Miller) in 1952 and had three sons, Jeff, Mike and Jack. Graduated from the University of Iowa with a Masters Degree in Physical Therapy in 1957 and practiced at Borgess Hospital from 1957 - 1970 and then at Southwestern Rehabilitation Hospital in Battle Creek, MI, retiring in 1994. Phil married his second wife, Dorothy (Peck) Needham in 1973. Phil and Dorothy lived their first 35 years of marriage in Richland where they became part of the community. Phil was a very focused therapist who enjoyed helping his patients recover. His favorite sport was golf followed closely by bowling. Phil bowled on several leagues in Richland. Phil was a history enthusiast. He was well read and enjoyed sharing his knowledge of past wars, the recession, other cultures, politics and religions. Phil was preceded in death by his parents Alexander and Laura, his brother William and his step son Danny Needham. He leaves behind his loving wife of 44 years Dorothy, three sons Jeff Edie of Las Vegas, NV, Mike (Bonnie) Edie of Allegan, MI, Jack (Sharon) Edie of Parkland, FL, three step children, Terry (MaryAnne) Needham of Portage, MI, Larry (Laura) Needham of Scotts, MI, Susan (Harvey) Kuiper of Vicksburg, MI, 13 wonderful grandchildren, Jenny (Andy) Cupp, Kristin (Zack) Phillips, Michael Edie, Nicole Edie, Richard Needham, Jodi Needham, Patrick Needham, Jennifer (Marc) Grand, Chad Lucas, Troy (Dani) Lucas, Nathan (Megan) Kuiper, Larry (Gail) Needham, Lucas (Carmen) Needham and several great-grandchildren. A special thanks to friends Gary Corradini, Jack Jones and his walking buddy Ray Simond. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will take place at a later date.
