Peggy J. Hollenbeck-Portinga, age 78, of Portage, MI went to be with her Lord and Savior on Tuesday, April 26, 2016. Peggy was born in Fulton, Michigan on the family farm, July 4, 1937 to the late Forrest and Ruth (Harrison) Snyder. She graduated from Vicksburg High School in 1956. On June 23, 1957 she married Gary Hollenbeck, who preceded her in death on January 22, 1995. In addition to her husband and parents, Peggy was preceded in death by four brothers and two sisters. She worked for Simpson Paper Company in Vicksburg for a short time before deciding to stay home to raise her family. During this time she provided in-home daycare. Peggy was an excellent seamstress and enjoyed tailoring beautiful clothes for her girls. She also worked for the Vicksburg Commercial as a photo journalist for many years and was a long-time member of Lakeland Reformed Church. On March 31, 2001, Peggy married Richard Portinga who survives. She and Dick enjoyed traveling and took many wonderful trips with family and friends. Peggy loved Lake Michigan and they spent many summers in South Haven. She was an avid gardener and had a great passion for beautiful flowers and plants. Peggy is also survived by her children, Jodie (Brad) Charles, Jill Cain and Jane (Jeff) Jones; six grandchildren, Matt (Allison) Charles, Andy (Kristina) Charles, Heather and Amanda Cain and Emma and Ethan Jones; sisters, Joyce Francisco, Diane Reece and Vera (Chuck) Walker; sister-in-law, Iva Snyder; brother-in-law, Gordon Mitchell; many nieces, nephews and Richard's family. Visitation will take place at Lakeland Reformed Church, 10442 S. Sprinkle Road, Portage, MI 49002, on Friday, April 29, 2016 from 6:00-8:00 PM and Saturday, April 30, 2016 from 10:00-11:00 AM with a memorial service following at 11:00 AM. Pastor Ed Schmidt will officiate. Private interment will be held at North Fulton Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to Lakeland Reformed Church or South County News.
