Taylor, Paul A. 9/15/1944 - 7/3/2022 Kalamazoo, MI Dr. Paul Alan Taylor, age 77, passed away following a long illness on July 3, 2022, in his home in Kalamazoo, MI surrounded by loved ones. Paul was born on September 15, 1944, in Kansas City, MO. Following his graduation from Southeast High School in 1962, Paul received a full scholarship at Michigan State University where he earned a B.S. in Botany in 1966. He then attended the University of Wisconsin in Madison where he earned a M.S. in Biochemistry in 1969, and a Ph.D. in Plant Pathology in 1971. Paul continued postdoctoral work at the University California in Davis, CA from 1971-1973, where he met some of his future business partners. In 1973, Paul founded California Analytical Lab that later merged with two other labs to form ENSECO, Inc. the largest environmental analytical lab group in the US and now part of Corning Corporation. In 1991 Paul founded Taylor Technology, a company specializing in liquid chromatography – mass spectrometry, developing cutting-edge methodology that enabled unique capabilities for the analysis of pharmaceutical compounds. Paul retired five years after Pharmanet acquired Taylor Tech. Paul was a maverick who was also a chess grand master (and at one point the best player under 21 in the country). He was a speed reader (especially when it came to science fiction), a foodie, and an Apple and other electronics aficionado. He loved classical, jazz, and Latin music, keeping up with the latest in the chemical and biological sciences, cooking gourmet meals at home, and surprising people with his dancing skills at weddings. Paul married Marilyn Thompson Harmon in 1995. During their nearly 27-year marriage they built his business together and supported Paul's children and many nieces and nephews and others in their academic endeavors. After having lived in an island-style home in Princeton, NJ for their entire marriage, Paul and Marilyn designed and built a version of their dream home in her hometown of Kalamazoo, MI where they moved in early 2021. Paul was predeceased by his parents Carroll Taylor and Virginia Taylor (nee Havlic) and his brother, Mark Taylor. He is survived by his wife, Marilyn, his two children (from his marriage to Marian Brownlee McKee) Benjamin Swope Taylor (wife Alison Bettenberg Taylor) and Ann Dilys Taylor, his grandchildren Maxwell, Avery, and Jackson, and his siblings John Taylor, Walter Taylor, David Taylor, and Carla Whitt (husband Brad Whitt), and many nieces and nephews. Visitation will be from 4-6pm Sunday, July 10, 2022, at Langeland Family Funeral Homes Burial & Cremation Services, 622 S. Burdick St, Kalamazoo MI 49007.
