Racine - Oscar Brusha, 93, passed away surrounded by his loving family on Saturday, July 9, 2016. He was born in Racine on July 17, 1922, son of the late Oscar and Christine (nee: Cucciare) Brusha and was a lifelong Racine resident. On September 6, 1947, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, he was united in marriage to Lucille F. Porcaro. They were happily wed for 52 years until her death in June of 2000.

Oscar, along with his brother, Christie, were owners of Brusha’s Club and Restaurant, opening in May of 1955 and retiring in November of 1991. Oscar spent his retirement years actively involved with his devoted family. Whether it be traveling to Europe, Canada, Mexico, Africa, Latin America, Hawaii, the Caribbean, or various locations throughout the United States, Oscar had his family by his side. He loved opportunities for adventure which included riding roller coasters, going whitewater rafting, swimming with dolphins, countless trips to Disney Parks, and touring new lands. Oscar enjoyed life to the fullest and even began skydiving annually at the age of 90 in celebration of his birthday. At home, he kept active by working in his yard, riding his moped, spending quality time with his family and teaching them the art of cooking at which he was very skilled. Making pasta sauce, Italian sausage, and other family recipes became family events which will remain treasured gifts to his children and grandchildren. Oscar also shared countless stories with his family about growing up during the Great Depression, joining the Civilian Conservation Corp in 1939, and then joining the U.S Coast Guard in 1942 during World War II. Through 1946, Oscar proudly served on the USS Sellstrom (DE-255) doing convoy duty throughout the North Atlantic and Mediterranean and also patrolling the Caribbean, Panama Canal, Alaskan waters, Sea of Japan and the Pacific. In 2012, he was honored to have been accompanied to Washington, D.C. by his son, Brian, on the Honor Flight for veterans of WWII. In 2015, he was proud to revisit Pattison State Park with his children and grandchildren to recount where he served in the CCC in Camp Pattison Company 3663. Above all, Oscar was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather who was loved and appreciated by his family. He will be deeply missed.

Survivors include his son, Brian (Brenda) Brusha; his daughter, Sandra (Dr. Anthony) Deuster; his four grandchildren, Stephanie (Roger) Gemignani, Brian Brusha II, Trent Deuster, and Trista Deuster, all of Racine; two sisters, Christina Rice and Rose (Bill) Ruffalo, both of Racine; one brother-in-law, Tony Porcaro of Racine; two sisters-in-law, Betty Valente of Scottsdale, AZ, and Josephine Porcaro of Racine; special friends, Evelyn Dagostino of Largo, FL, and Kelly (Arline) Hanek of Racine; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Frank Brusha, Sam Brusha, Christie Brusha; sisters, Katie Onorato, Dorothy Geisler, and Ann Brusha.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 1533 Erie St., Friday, July 15, 2016, 10:30 a.m., with Rev. Steve Varghese officiating. Entombment with Full Military Honors will follow at Holy Cross Garden Mausoleum, Hwy 32. Relatives and friends may meet with the family at the funeral home on Thursday from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. and on Friday at the church from 10:00 a.m. until time of Mass at 10:30 a.m.

The family extends a special thank you to the entire staff on the 4th floor at Wheaton Franciscan-All Saints for all of their loving and compassionate care.

“Those we hold most dear never truly leave us.… they live on in the kindness they showed, the comfort they shared, and the love they brought into our lives.”
