Onnig Hachigian passed away peacefully Saturday December 13, 2014 in Livonia with his family by his side. He was born to Takvor and Heghneh Hachigian on July 22, 1924 in Massena, New York. He was the second of four children and their only son. He grew up in the Delray area of Detroit where he worked in his parent's small grocery store with his sisters Barbara, Annie, and Rosie. He was a graduate of Southwestern High School. Onnig served in General Patton's third army during World War II where he was stationed in Europe. Onnig was a proud AmernianAmerican who was a loyal member of the American Legion Vartan Post. When he returned home to Michigan he met his bride of fiftynine years, Shooshanik Hachigian. They were married in June of 1952 on Flag Day. They had three children Jack, Levon and Sarkis. Onnig was a hardworking man who worked at General Motors for 36 years to support his family. Onnig actively supported his church and community. He was a dedicated member of St. Sarkis Apostolic Church where he served on the board for many years. He was also elected to the National Representative Assembly; in 2014 he was honored with the Eagle of the Prelacy award from the Eastern Prelacy for devoted and exceptional service to the church. He was also a member of the AYF and ARF. One of his greatest moments in life was his visit to Armenia. Onnig was a kind, gentle man who loved his family and friends. He was an avid Detroit sports fan, especially the Tigers, Red Wings and U of M. While he was blessed and proud of his three amazing sons Jack, Levon and Sarkis, he was thrilled to gain three loving daughters, Niky, Susie and Diane. They rounded out his family. He loved nothing more than spending time with his grandchildren. They brought him immense happiness and joy. He was very proud of Christina, his first grandchild. He often referred to her as “Christ child”. She was the apple of his eyes. When his second grandchild, Stephen, was born, he was thrilled to have a grandson who he could share his love of gardening and sports with. Onnig was an important presence in his grandchildren's lives as they grew up. He was very proud of their graduation from college and their careers as teachers. Onnig was blessed with a third grandchild, Ryan, when he was 80 who brought him a renewed sense of joy. He enjoyed this opportunity to watch him grow to a young boy and eating breakfast with him at Big Boy. He shall always be lovingly remembered by his family and friends.

Visitation will be held Monday 3-8pm with Dan Gark prayers at 7pm at our Neely-Turowski Life Story Funeral Home; 30200 Five Mile Rd (between Merriman and Middlebelt). Funeral Tuesday 11am at St. Sarkis Armenian Church; 19300 Ford Rd in Dearborn. Interment; Parkview Memorial Cemetery.
