Nelly DeBruin

Passed away on Tuesday, June 20, 2017 at the age of 94. Nelly was born in The Hague, Netherlands on July 13, 1922, the daughter of the late Gerrit Schiedon and Nellie (Schmidt) Schiedon. She came to the United States in December of 1951, with her husband and two small children. She resided in Kalamazoo most of her life, with some years living in Orlando, FL. She worked for Jacobson's Department Store, retiring after twenty years of service. She was a member of Temple Baptist Church. Nelly is survived by two children, John DeBruin of Orlando, FL and Annelies (John) DeBruin-Peterson of Portage; three grandchildren, Christopher (Pam) Carson, Heidi (Dan Truckey) Curtis and Amanda (Kevin) Debruin-Williams; five great-grandchildren, Jacob, Lauren, Lilly, Gerrit and Bennett. Friends may visit with the family from 12-1 p.m. on Thursday, June 29, 2017 at the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Portage Chapel, 411 East Centre Ave., Portage, MI 49002. The funeral service will follow the visitation at 1 p.m., with interment to follow in Portage South Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be given to Kalamazoo Gospel Mission, 448 N.
