Life Story / Obituary

Nancy Grace Stilson of Elk Rapids passed away August 14, 2014, from complications of COPD. A celebration of her life will be held on Saturday August 23, 2014, at 2:00 pm at the Milton Township Hall in Kewadin, Michigan. An informal gathering will continue from 2:30pm to 4:30pm.

Nancy was born in Elk Rapids, Michigan, on June 28, 1945, to Ed and Grace (Sutter) Stilson. She graduated from Elk Rapids High School in 1963.

Nothing gave Nancy more joy then her family. She lived to spend time with them. She was very proud of her grandchildren who were all involved in sports, she made sure to attend at least one game, each season, no matter where she lived. She recently experienced her great-grandson Kenny's first baseball game. No one was more proud of their accomplishments and had great faith in all they could and would do.

Nancy was an avid reader and enjoyed reading about the south pre-civil war era. She also enjoyed watching western movies (The old ones, not any of those new ones). While not one for sappy movies, she did fall in love with the movie Titanic and Gone with the Wind; even though, neither starred her favorite actor, John Wayne. She loved music, mostly older country, and most especially Johnny Cash!

Nancy was one of those amazing people who easily made friends that became part of her family. Once you were loved by her, you were one of hers. She had a way of listening to you that made you feel like you were the most important person in her life.

Nancy loved to cook for her family and is known for her Beef Stew, omelets, and fried chicken. Her favorite food group was chocolate, and she would sneak it whenever and however she could.

She was a hard worker and always had to be busy. Her first job was working at her family Laundromat and then had numerous other jobs over the years including cashier, waitress, and factory worker.

Nancy was 11 years sober this year, both her, and her family were very proud of that accomplishment.

Nancy is survived by many loved ones; her daughter Grace (Duane) Waters, her grandchildren, Tricia (Kenny) Cummings, James (Shelby) Weston, Brookes Weston and Tristan Waters, great-grandchildren, Kenny & Kortnee Cummings and Liam Weston, brothers James (Sue) Stilson, Mitchell (Sally) Stilson, Gordon Hulburt, cousins, nieces and nephews and many "adopted" children & grandchildren.

Nancy was preceded in death by her parents, Grace (Sutter) and Ed Stilson and sister, Darlene Hulburt.

In lieu of flowers, please pay it forward to someone. Nancy was always helping those that she knew and didn't know. It would give her great joy to have it paid forward in her name. Please visit Nancy's webpage at www.lifestorynet.com to read more and sign the guest book and share a message with her family. The family chose Life Story Funeral Home, Traverse City.
