Nan Carol Manley was a hard working woman with a big heart. She was accomplished in her career, curious about her world and generous with her time. Dedicated, gracious and kind, Nan was at her best when she “gave herself away.”

Nan Carol was born to William and Christina Charles in Detroit, Michigan on November 29, 1944. World War II dominated American life, and as men went off to war and women were drawn into the workplace, the nation pulled together to make life good for the next generation. With Nan’s father working as a Technical Writer and her mother as a nurse, they raised six children including Suzy, Mary, Bill, Steve and Cecily.

Nan’s childhood was filled with people, places and pets that made for lasting memories. The French Family Cottage was the Charle's summer getaway, Uncle Joe entertained the children with magic tricks and Michael the pet parakeet provided Nan with endless hours of amusement.

During her high school years, Nan was already planning for a career by working in an accounting co-op. She graduated from Mackenzie High School 1962 and went to work for a major Michigan employer, Hudson’s department store. Eventually she moved to Comerica Bank, another Detroit original. Nan married David Manley in the 1970's which lasted 25 years and he precedes her in death in 2003. He had three sons.

During her leisure, Nan served at many functions within her church family and played in the bell choir at St. John Fenton. Her love of travel took her to Alaska, California, Texas, Florida, Mississippi, Oklahoma and Jamaica. Recently, she traveled to Iowa to see the American Eagle family that had become a media sensation since 2011, when web-cam footage was streamed live to the public.

Quite naturally, Nan was a fan of Detroit sports—Red Wings hockey and Tiger baseball—and each spring she looked forward to opening day at the ball park. She was fascinated with old movies and couldn’t get enough of Three Men and a Tenor, a local professional group with an amazing sound and delightful humor.

Nan was blessed by her friendship with Rick Reynolds and charitable about the good-natured teasing she took from other friends. In many ways, Nan was a magnanimous person, and every child who came into her life felt dearly loved. That’s because Nan gave her all to whatever captured her heart.

Nan Carol Manley passed away Sunday, February 21, 2016 at the age of 71. She will be missed and remembered by her beloved friends and family.
