Michael was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing, bicycling, kayaking and gardening. He was a volunteer for many years with the Leelanau Conservancy maintaining the Whale Back Trail in Leelanau County west of Leland. He was preceded in death by his father, Joseph Kane and a sister, Mary Kane Franczek.
