Merle L. Smith, age 76, passed away Sunday, October 29, 2017 at Ascension All Saints Medical Center. He was born in Butler County, Pennsylvania, July 8, 1941, son of the late John and Ruth (Nee: Deal) Smith.

He had been employed by J.I. Case Company as a machinist for twenty-six years, retiring in 2001. After retirement he worked as a security guard at St. Mary’s Hospital for several years. An auto mechanic at heart, Merle also loved his country music and enjoyed caring for his yard. More than anything he treasured time spent with his family.

He will be dearly missed by his wife, Judith; his children, Brian (Nicolette) Smith of Sturtevant, Becky Smith of Racine; his grandchildren, Alychia, Brittney, and Dylan Smith, and Jayden Smith; sisters and brothers, Shirley Keefer of PA, Leo Smith, Ellen (Donald) Fleeger, all of Racine, Leona (Donald) Pupak of Lilly, WI, Norma (Robert) Hovorka of Racine; sister-in-law, Penny Smith of PA; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many dear friends. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his brothers, Russ, James, William and Paul Smith; infant siblings, Joyce, John, Bobby, and Donna.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, November 2, 2017, 12:00 P.M. at the funeral home. Interment will follow at West Lawn Memorial Park. Relatives and friends may meet with the family Thursday at the funeral home from 10:00 A.M. until time of service at 12:00 P.M.

The family extends a special thank you to Dr. Joseph Mathew and his nurse, Shelby, Dr. Michael Ansani, Dr. Robert Gerber, Dr. James Tierney, Dr. Iftekhar Bader, and the nurses and staff in the ICU at Ascension All Saints, especially Jenny and Tracy for their loving and compassionate care.
