Mancell Edward Hein 92 of Traverse City, died Thursday, January 30, 2014 at the Grand Traverse Pavilions. The Lord needed one more firefighter and Mancell answered the last alarm of his life.

He was born on January 1, 1922 in Detroit the son of Edward "Ted" and Muriel (Jackson) Hein.

Mancell was a PFC in the Army during WWII; where he received numerous medals to include the Purple Heart. He served in the Phillipines and New Guinea.

Mancell was a retired Lieutenant with the Detroit Fire Department, retiring after 27 years from Engine #58.

He enjoyed fishing, cooking and woodworking. He loved being a father, grandfather and great-grandfather.

Mancell is survived by his children, Alyce Hein , Susan (Nels) Olson and David (Sandra) Hein all of Traverse City; grandchildren, Nicole and Jackie Hein and Kimberly ad Mary Shortreed; great-grandson, Lucas Edward Shortreed and sister and brother-in-law, Alice and Tony Trupiano of St. Clair.

He is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Helen Minnie (Kunath) Hein who died, July 9, 2002 and special friend, Joan Duff.

The family will greet friends from 9am to 11am Saturday, February 1, 2014 at the Life Story Funeral Home, Traverse City. A brief military service will be held at 11am.

In lieu of flowers the family would like donations to the Cherryland VFW Post #2780 Honor Guard, 3400 Veterans Drive, Traverse City, MI 49684.
