Loretta Carey

Although her time ended much too soon, Loretta Carey made a significant impact on the hearts of everyone she met. She was a hardworking woman of many interests, but nothing was better than being surrounded by her loved ones. A deeply devoted family woman, it was no secret that Loretta was married to the love of her life, and together they witnessed their family tree blossom to include the children and grandchildren she adored. Never one to let life get the best of her, she faced whatever came her way with both grace and strength that were to be admired. Life will never be the same without Loretta here, but her family will forever treasure the memories they made together.

It seems only fitting that Loretta’s journey began during a time that was as colorful as she was. It was the 1950s when televisions were becoming part of our homes in record numbers and shows like Father Knows Best transformed the way we viewed the American family. James Dean made young girls swoon on the silver screen, and Elvis was king. It was just as this exciting time was dawning that Frank and Julia Rybinski were eagerly anticipating the birth of their new baby as spring unfolded on the horizon in Detroit, Michigan, in May of 1950. Their wait was over when the baby girl they named Loretta Marie drew her first breath on May 15th in Detroit Memorial Hospital. She was the second of seven Rybinski children as she was raised in the family home alongside her older sister, Cathy, and her younger siblings, Douglas, Frank, John, Dolores, and Timmy. Her father worked for Chrysler while her mother was a busy homemaker. Loretta attended local schools.

After graduating from high school in the late 1960s, Loretta was eager for all that life had in store. She had aspirations of becoming a hairdresser, but she ended up working in a few other industries including in housekeeping at the Royal Inn, at CVS for four years, and for three years at Kmart.

There was never anything that was of greater importance to Loretta than her family. It has been said that it was love at first sight when she met her husband, Ronald Carey, and they soon began dating. With a desire to establish a life together, the sweethearts were married. Later, they were filled with unspeakable joy to welcome two children, Ronnie and Jennifer, into their hearts and home. Things only got better when grandchildren began arriving, and their family grew to include four grandchildren Devon, Brendan, Noah and Conner. Of course when it came to her grandchildren, Loretta loved spoiling them, and she savored every moment she had to spend with them. She went over and above when it came to shopping for them at birthdays and Christmastime, and she regularly took them out to dinner and to the movies as well as to the church festival at St. Raphael. Extended family was always very important to Loretta as well. She loved spending time up North visiting her sister, Dolores, and her nieces. She also looked forward to visiting her sister, Cathy, and her family on vacation.

Throughout her life Loretta was one to keep busy. She enjoyed watching her favorite shows, General Hospital, Shock Theatre, and the original Dark Shadows as well as cheering on the Detroit Red Wings and watching the Olympics. At home, Loretta loved cooking and wasn’t afraid to experiment with new recipes with cooking for her family being a favorite. With her own creative flair, Loretta enjoyed making a variety of crafts. When it came to music, she loved Rod Stewart, Elvis, Michael Bolton, and classic rock ’n roll.

When spending only a few moments with Loretta Carey, it only took a few moments to see that she was a lover of life. She made the most of every day she was given while holding her loved ones close to her heart. Loretta was forever laughing, and her laughter was certainly contagious while her zest for life was unmatched as well. She took everything in stride, often saying, “Oh well,” while encouraging others to do the same. Loretta deeply loved her family, and although she treasured her roles as a wife and mother, she just may have argued that becoming a grandmother was the role of a lifetime. Deeply loved, she will be forever missed.

Loretta M Carey died on November 27, 2015. Loretta’s family includes her husband, Ronald; children, Ronald (Nicole) and Jennifer (Jason) Seib; grandchildren, Devon, Brendan, Noah and Conner; siblings, Cathy, Frank, John, Dolores, Tim, and the late Douglas.
