Lois B. Johnson of Portage, MI went home to be with her Lord on August 14, 2017, at the age of 89. Lois was born June 2, 1928 in Kalamazoo, MI, the daughter of Harry and Wilhelmina (Ebelink) VanHoe. On July 9, 1947, she was united in marriage to John E. Johnson. A longtime resident of Portage, Lois diligently fought for Portage to become incorporated as the City of Portage. Lois was elected the first City Clerk for the City of Portage where she faithful served for 31 years, prior to her retirement in 1993. She was a member to the Michigan Association of Municipal Clerks and was honored to be selected clerk of the year in 1991. Lois and John loved to travel and were proud of the fact that they had visited all 50 states. She was a longtime member of the Netherlands Reformed Congregation. Lois loved her work and church, but the most important part of her life was her family. She was preceded in death by her husband John on August 4, 2005. She was also preceded by her parents; her siblings Harold VanHoe, Lucille Voss and Frances VanHoe; and by her son-in-law Robert Campbell. Surviving are her two daughters Sally Campbell and Susan (Gary) Meschke; six grandchildren Ellis (Kristin) Meschke, Ben (Laura) Meschke, Aaron (Leah) Meschke, Lucas (Alicia) Meschke, Betsy Meschke and Colin (Laura) Meschke; 15 great-grandchildren; brother Donald VanHoe; several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 12:00 to 2:00PM on Friday, August 18th at the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Portage Chapel, 411 E. Centre St. where her Funeral Service will begin at 2:00PM with Rev. Herman Hoffman officiating. Interment will follow in Portage South Cemetery. Memorials in Lois' memory may be directed to Providence Christian School; or Southern Care Hospice.
