Age 84, of Springfield, MI, passed away with her family by her side on Monday, June 24, 2019 at the Glenn Arbor Hospice Residence in Battle Creek, MI. She was born October 16, 1934 in Hayti, MO the daughter of Delbert Flowers and Flossie (Henderson) Flowers. She graduated from South Bend Central High School (Indiana) then graduated in 1990 with an associate's degree in travel and tourism from Davenport College. Lavenia had been a homemaker all of her life along with being a "foster grandparent" in the schools. She had lived with her family in Kalamazoo, MI from 1963 until 1996. She married Dennis L. Burnside on December 18, 1955 in Benton Harbor, MI; they later divorced. She is survived by her son: Dennis A. Burnside of Lansing, MI; two daughters: Linda D.R. Burnside of Springfield, MI; Rochelle L. Burnside of Battle Creek, MI; two brothers: Tom Flowers and Peter Flowers both of Toledo, Ohio; five grandchildren: Jordan Lewis, Dennis Burnside, Christopher Burnside, Lindsey Burnside, Lauren Burnside; and two great grandchildren: Christian Burnside and Cruz Burnside; and her brother-in-law: Everett Lewis. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and daughter: Debra M. Lewis in Dec. 2017, two sisters: Ruby Flowers in May 2001 and Doris Flowers in Oct. 2018, two granddaughters: Jessica and Marissa Lewis on March 29, 2010. She was a devout Christian, and loved Bible study, reading, traveling, collecting salt and pepper shakers; she spent 7 years as a foster grandparent in the Battle Creek Schools which she felt she had made a difference in children's lives. Visitation will be held at the Bachman Hebble Funeral Service on Monday, July 1, 2019 from 10:00 AM until service time. Funeral service will commence at 11:00 AM on Monday in the funeral home chapel with Pastor LeRoy Smith, Sr. officiating. Private family burial will be Tuesday, July 2, 2019 at the Mt. Ever-Rest Memorial Park in Kalamazoo, MI. Memorial tributes may be made to: Foster Grandparents, 940 South Grand Traverse Street, Flint, MI 48502.
