VAN ASSEN, Lawrence H.

Wyoming, MI

Age 90, went to be with his Lord & Savior on July 2, 2018. Larry was born April 4, 1928 in Grand Rapids to the late Harry & Anna (Werkema) Van Assen. He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Fred & Roger; and his step mother, Jennie Van Assen. Larry worked in the furniture industry and made beautiful furniture for family to cherish. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and a faithful member of Orchard Hill (Fairview) Reformed Church for his entire life. Larry was an avid sportsman and played golf until age 85. He always kept his sense of humor. Larry is survived by his wife of 70 years, Shirley; children, Ruth (Doug) Haveman, Kathleen (Ross) Marsman, Craig (Suzanne) Van Assen, Jayne (Craig) Gilmer; grandchildren, Christine (Kris) Lesley, Scott (Lindsay) Haveman, Keith (Jennifer) Marsman, Chad (Teri) Marsman, Jason (Brooke) Van Assen, Kara (Ross) Poll, Deena (Jeff) Vroegindewey, Matthew (Corissa) Gilmer, Michelle (Jesse) Veenstra; and 20 great grandchildren. Also surviving are brother in law, Jay Bode; sisters in law, Gertrude Bogard, Eleanor Van Houten, Ethyl (Cyril) Sikkema, and Joyce (Ed) Van Houten. A funeral service will be held Thursday, July 5 at 11 AM at Orchard Hill Reformed Church, 1465 3 Mile Rd NW. Friends may visit with family on Tuesday, July 3 from 6-8 at Heritage Life Story Funeral Home, 2120 Lake Michigan Drive NW and beginning at 10 AM at church. Interment will be in Rosedale Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to Childrens Heart Foundation. A sincere thank you to Faith Hospice and First and Main for the wonderful care provided to Larry.
