DeGroat, Kevin "Kevy" Kalamazoo Passed away Thursday, August 11, 2016 in Kalamazoo. He was born June 14, 1953 in Kalamazoo, MI the son of the late Junius DeGroat and Jeanne (Graine) DeGroat and had lived in Lansing, MI for several years. Graduating with high honors, Kevin received a B.A. Degree from the University of Michigan, with concentrations in English, Political Science, and Social Science. He also received a M.A. Degree in Professional Writing from Western Michigan University. Kevin was employed by the State of Michigan for 33 years retiring in 2010 as a Regulation Specialist. In his leisure time, Kevin was an avid reader, researcher, and an accomplished writer. He was a loving, devoted family member and friend, cherished and respected by many. Kevin had a humble, charitable spirit, was an excellent listener, and lived his life with dignity. Kevin is survived by his mother Jeanne DeGroat; sister, Kim Nichols and brother-in-law, Robert Nichols, Jr. of Morrisville, NC; sister, Kathy DeGroat-Johnson of Kalamazoo; nephew, William Johnson IV, M.D. of Ann Arbor; and niece, Brianna Chatman of Kalamazoo; aunts and several cousins. In accordance with his wishes, cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held at 2:00pm Friday, September 2, 2016 at Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Westside Chapel, 3926 South 9th Street with Rev. Michael Brown officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday beginning at 1:00pm until service time. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Bronson Health Foundation, 301 John St, Box C, Attn.: ALS Clinic, Kalamazoo, MI 49007. The family extends special thanks to Dr. Bradtke, the staff at Bronson Hospital, Park Place Assisted Living Facility, and Rose Arbor Hospice for their diligent and compassionate care.
