Egeler, Katherine H. 6/6/1920 - 3/7/2017 Portage Katie passed away peacefully on March 7, 2017 at the age of 96. She was an independent woman who lived in her own home up to the week before she died. She had an undeniable love for fishing, hunting, gardening and the companionship of her fellow knitters from Portage Senior Center, who made bonnets and sweaters for premie babies at both Bronson & Brogess Hospitals. But most of all she loved her two daughters, Sandy Shewmake Biggin and Linda Shewmake McCormick and their families. Katie was born in Augusta, Michigan to Claude and Mable (Robe) Whipple, who preceded her in death, as did her first husband Gratus Shewmake, second husband Ernest Egeler, daughter Linda Darrow McCormick, grandson Thomas Darrow, brothers Richard and Kenneth Whipple and sister Twila Ledbetter Shirey. She leaves behind her daughter Sandy and Sandy's children; Michael (Tisha) May, June Dennany May and Dawn (Joe) Etchison, all from Lansing/Dewitt, MI. Linda's children; James (Lynette) Darrow, Kevin Darrow and Kurt (Jodi) Darrow of Kalamazoo. Her great grandchildren Hunter and McKenna May, Tyler and Brooke Dennany, and Olivia Etchison of Lansing and Dillon, Bryce, Will, Lindsey and Amanda Darrow, Alicia (Chad) VandenBerg and Samantha (Jessie) Berrens of Kalamazoo. She also leaves six great, great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, her friends at the Portage Senior Center and Zion Lutheran Church to mourn her passing. Katie was very involved with her family; in her late 80's she spent many mornings driving her great, great grandchild to his speech lessons and when her younger sister was in Memory Care, she would phone her every day to encourage her to eat her meals. She was a loving person who was eager to give a smooch and a hug and while she lived a long and fulfilling life, will nonetheless be sadly missed by her family and friends. As per her wishes, cremation has taken place. Services and burial next to her husband, Gratus Shewmake will take place later this spring. Memorial donations may be made to the charity of your choice . Please go to her webpage to leave a message for her family at www.avinkcremation.com
