She was born July 17, 1939, in Lucedale, MS the daughter of the late Charles and Julia (Allman) Parnell. Julie was raised in a career military family and was exposed to many things during her father's long career in the US Navy. She was raised primarily in Jacksonville, Florida where she graduated from Jacksonville University. It was there that she met and married her husband of 61 years Walker. In 1982 Walker's job with Stryker brought the family to Portage. She brought her southern grace, generosity and cooking with her and had many wonderful relationships in the community. Julie enjoyed working for the Irving S. Gilmore where she spent 10 years before retiring. She was especially fond of her membership in Second Reformed Church of Kalamazoo. There, she enjoyed volunteering with various charities, a monthly book club and her Women's Bible Study Circle. Julie was a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother. Her kind and generous spirit lives on in those who knew her. Julie is survived by her husband Walker Batts and their children, Angie (Rob) Klein and Steve (Stephanie) Batts, and grandchildren, Henry, Marshall, and William Klein and Michael, Kayla, and Sydney Batts.
