Van Bruggen , Joyce E. 7/30/1929 - 7/22/2021 Comstock Age 91, passed away at her home on July 22, 2021, surrounded by loved ones. She was born in Kalamazoo, MI, on July 30, 1929, the daughter of the late James and Wave (Stratton) Teachout. Joyce was a kind, gentle and loving woman who was a joy to know. She was a loyal wife, loving mother and dedicated grandmother and great-grandmother. Joyce worked hard all her life. She was an accounts manager for John Hancock and later for Blue Care. After retiring she filled her days by making wonderful memories with her family and friends. She enjoyed traveling and included her grandchildren on many trips. She was a selfless person and was always willing to take the time to help watch grandchildren and great-grandchildren when called upon. Her heart and home were always open to others. She loved to cook and bake and was gifted at decorating cakes. Her home was also the center for many family gatherings and reunions. She loved animals, especially her beloved cats. Above all Joyce loved her family and she leaves them with many wonderful memories to cherish. On July 24, 1948, she married the love of her life Joseph "Joe" Van Bruggen who survives. She is also survived by her loving daughter, Jane VanDerSlik; grandchildren, Allen "Lee" (April) VanDerSlik, Shellee VanDerSlik; great-grandchildren, Adrian, Aeryn, Avery and Aerika VanDerSlik; sister, Kay Longenecker; many other family and friends. She was also preceded in passing by a son, Joseph J. Van Bruggen III and many siblings. In accordance with her wish cremation will take place and a celebration of her life will be held on Thursday, July 29, 2021, at the funeral home, from 4:00 to 6:00 PM. She will be laid to rest privately at Riverside Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Kalamazoo Humane Society, c/o the funeral home.
