Ubbes, John Michael 7/12/1952 - 3/1/2021 Waterford, MI John Michael Ubbes, age 68, of Waterford, Michigan passed away on March 1, 2021 after a short illness. John was born on July 12, 1952 in Kalamazoo, Michigan, attended Comstock High School, and majored in Mechanical Engineering at Michigan Tech University. After working briefly at Holley Carburetor in Detroit and Inland Steel in Indiana, he settled on a 30-year career as a development engineer for GMC Truck at the General Motors Proving Grounds in Milford, MI. He enjoyed water skiing and entertaining family and friends at his cottage on Big Lake which he built himself. He also enjoyed collecting model trains and going to train shows with like-minded friends, and especially serving as a celebrity judge at the annual Corvette Show in Carlisle, PA. He was preceded in death by his parents Jean and Dorothy Ubbes and his sister Laurie (Ubbes) Turpel, all of Kalamazoo, MI and is survived by his brother William (Valerie) Ubbes of Hamilton, OH, his brother-in-law Keith (Sandi) Turpel of Kalamazoo, niece Allegra Ubbes of Chicago, IL and nephew Joshua Ubbes of Atlanta, GA, nieces Molly Turpel and Megan (Lewis) Turpel of Kalamazoo, Kirsten Turpel of Chicago, and nephew Peter (Rebekah) Turpel of Farmington Hills, including 2 grand nieces. He was supported in life and in death by a close circle of friends built up through his work and his hobbies. A memorial service will be held on Saturday June 26 at St Luke's Episcopal Church, 247 W. Lovell St., Kalamazoo 49007 at 1:00 in the afternoon.
