John W. Houts, age 79, of Kalamazoo, MI passed away on January 10, 2017. He was the son of Lawrence Houts and Amelia Johnson Houts. John spent his professional career in the printing business in Kalamazoo. He was a long term member of the First Presbyterian Church where he served in various capacities including the renovation committee. John was a family man and was a father figure to many beyond his two daughters. He spent his retirement doing home projects at his home and the homes of his children, river rafting, building rock walls and spending valuable time in every hardware, antique and salvage store in America. He was a great husband, father, Papa and friend. He always gave his best effort and was truly loved by his entire family and all who knew him. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Connie Houts, daughters, Sarah Houts Heyl (Derrick) and their sons, Jack and David Heyl of New Orleans, LA, Martha Houts Flynn of Kalamazoo and her daughter, Amelia Yates of New Orleans, LA. He is also survived by his brother, Larry Houts and wife Maxine who live in northern Michigan, brother in law, David Crockett (Robin), sister in law, Judy Crockett Minor (James) and sister in law, Virginia Crockett and several nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to go to First Presbyterian Church endowment fund or Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra. At his request, John has already been cremated. There will be no visitation. A celebration of John's life will be held at the First Presbyterian Church on Saturday January 14th at 11:00 AM with a luncheon following.
