Joan M. Ponstein, age 95, of Holland passed away Thursday, July 30, 2015 at Resthaven Care Center – Boersma Cottage.

Joan was known for her compassion and sunny disposition as she volunteered throughout her life. She was a loyal and kind friend to those she worked with her, and a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and sister to family.

Joan was born in Holland and graduated from Holland Christian High School and Holland Business College. She worked for Rooks Transfer as a bookkeeper for 8 years until she was married. As a member of Maplewood Reformed Church, she taught Sunday school and Catechism for many years. She also volunteered weekly at the Holland City Mission, was an officer with the Washington School PTA for many years and taught Friendship Club for 15 years. After retirement, she volunteered at Evergreen Commons.

She was a life-time learner and audited many courses at Hope College, where her husband, Dr. Lambert Ponstein, was a Religion Professor. She was an avid reader and a ready babysitter for her grandchildren. Joan was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Lambert J. Ponstein.

She is survived by her three daughters, Mary and Allan DeLange of Orland Park, Il, Susan and Carey Boote of Holland, and Nancy and Michael Disabato of Mequon, WI and seven grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Wilma and Art Worthy of Holland and sister-in-law, Evelyn Ponstein of Grandville.

A celebration of her life and triumph in Christ will be held Thursday, August 6, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at Maplewood Reformed Church, 133 East 34th Street, Holland, MI. Reverend Leigh Van Kempen will be officiating. Burial will be in Pilgrim Home Cemetery.
