Jeanette Dean Baas (DeHamer of Kalamazoo, MI passed away on December 20th, 2016 surrounded by her family in Allegan, MI. She made the world a better place for 99 years, 8 months, and 18 days. Jeanette was an exceptional human being who was a pioneer in the field of law enforcement by working for public safety as the first female school crossing guard. Later in life, she spent much of her time volunteering for worthy causes such as knitting newborn caps for the Baby Guild, staffing blood drives for the Red Cross, and working for Senior Services. Jeanette was recognized as volunteer of the year for her dedication to such causes. Jeanette exemplified excellence in other ways as well, such as attending community college at the age of 85 to study computer sciences and most recently being named USA Track and Field National Champion for winning the 100-meter dash in her age group. Jeanette was also a valued member of her church community and was a charter member of both Hope Reformed Church and Immanuel Fellowship Church. Jeanette was married to Rufus Baas, who preceded her in death. She was also preceded by her brother Janus and a grandson Timothy. She is survived by her large family including 5 children James (Marcia) Baas, Roger Baas, Sally (Don) Dam, John (Susan) Baas, Marilyn (Joseph) Hasfurther, 10 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, and 7 great-great grandchildren. Jeanette will be remembered for her infectious and omnipresent laughter, her love of God and family, and her caring nature. Jeanette's steadfast dedication to never being the first to say good-bye at the end of any conversation comforts her family, as they know they are destined to see her again. A private graveside service will be held in Mt. Ever-Rest Cemetery. The details of a memorial service to honor Jeanette's 100th birthday and to celebrate her life will be announced later to be held on April 2, 2017. Memorials in Jeanette's memory may be directed to Wings of Hope Hospice, 530 Linn St., Allegan, MI 49010; or Immanuel Fellowship Church, 6015 West H Ave., Kalamazoo, MI 49009. Arrangements entrusted to Langeland Family Funeral Homes.
