Jack Eberhard

Jack William Eberhard, age 66, of Hancock, passed away after a six-year battle with cancer on Monday, January 22, 2018 while with relatives in Charleston, South Carolina. A visitation will take place on Friday, February 2nd, 2018 at Memorial Chapel in Hancock from 5:00 to 7:00 pm. His funeral service will be held Saturday, February 3rd, at 1:30 pm in Hancock at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church. A gathering for friends and relatives to celebrate Jack's life will be held at the church following the funeral service. Jack was born September 15, 1951 in Kalamazoo, Michigan. He is survived by his three sons: Kyle (Megan Grant) Eberhard of Traverse City, Michigan, Sean Eberhard of Charleston, South Carolina, and Sam Eberhard of Austin, Texas; ex-wife Suzanne Kilpela of Hancock, Michigan and brother, Tom (Diane) Eberhard of Kalamazoo, Michigan. He is also survived by loving in-laws, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Hershel and Eloise Eberhard and brother, Daniel Eberhard. Jack was a graduate of Kalamazoo Loy Norrix High School and Alma College. He was an honor student and a member of the football and basketball teams at Loy Norrix High School. After attaining his teaching certificate, he taught kindergarten thru eighth grade at the one room school house in Copper Harbor, Michigan. He also had teaching positions in other Michigan cities: Marquette, Midland, and Martin. During the summer he often worked on the Isle Royale Queen, a ferry boat that traveled from Copper Harbor to Isle Royal. After his teaching career, he owned a printing company called The Book Concern in Hancock, Michigan. His spirit of community service led him to serve on several local organizations. He attended the Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Hancock. Jack enjoyed most sports, particularly football, golf and tennis. He participated in his son's athletic endeavors as a supporting father and coach. He also enjoyed the outdoors as a hiker, cyclist and fisherman. Later in life, Jack became an avid golfer and enjoyed spending his free time with his golfing friends at Portage Lake Golf Club. His philanthropic vision was achieved in establishing the Portage Lake Gappy Golf League Academic Scholarship Fund, which provides a college monetary award for a deserving senior student at Houghton and Hancock High Schools that participates in golf. On January 24th, the Keweenaw Community Foundation Board of Directors renamed the Fund the Jack Eberhard Memorial Scholarship. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Jack Eberhard Memorial Scholarship Fund can be made to the Keweenaw Community Foundation, 236 Quincy St., Hancock, MI 49930.
