Howard F. Garland, 92 of Traverse City, died Tuesday, September 25, 2018.

Howard was born on January 27, 1926 on Old Mission Peninsula the son of Frank Willard and Anna (Sill) Garland. He graduated from Traverse City Central High School.

Howard was in the Army during WWII with the 10th Mountain Division, where he was stationed in Italy. He was very proud to be in the 10th Mountain Division and of their accomplishments. He was active in the Lower Michigan Chapter of the 10th Mountain Davison Reunion Group; where he was at one time President and Secretary. He and his wife attended many national reunions and 1994 returned to Italy with the group. He was a member of the Garland-Tomkins American Legion Post #399, Old Mission.

He enjoyed bowling and golf. He also enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren participating in their activates.

He was active at Trinity Lutheran Church both in Paw Paw and Traverse City; holding many positions on the church council. He cooked Easter Breakfast many years at both churches.

Howard is survived by his children, Camilla (Greg) Williams, John (Sandra) Garland, Bob (Kate) Garland, David (Pam) Garland, Jim (Jean) Garland, Tom (Jane) Garland; 16 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Anna; wife, Virginia M. Garland and siblings, Ruth, Frank, John and Gerald.

Memorial Services will be held 2pm, Sunday, September 30, 2018 at Trinity Lutheran Church; where the family will greet friends at 1:30pm. Memorial Contributions may be made to the Garland-Tompkins American Legion Post 399, Old Mission. Burial will be in the Wildey Cemetery, Paw Paw at a later date.
