Weissmann, Herman K. 12/25/1937 - 6/16/2022 Portage, MI Herman Karl Weissmann died Thursday, June 16, 2022, in Mattawan, MI after an extended illness. He was born December 25, 1937, in Highland Park, MI son of Herman and Pauline (Betz) Weissmann. Herman was baptized at Zion Lutheran Church in Ferndale, MI where the family lived. In May 1945, the family relocated to a farm outside of Chesaning, MI. They continued in their Lutheran faith by attending Christ Lutheran Church in Brady, MI. In 1950, Herman professed his faith during his confirmation at Christ Lutheran Church. He attended Brady Center School in his younger years and later attended Chesaning High School. In addition to attending school, Herman would help with the many chores on the farm. During his high school years, Herman was a member of the boys' choir, Glee Club, the Conservation Club, and the National Honor Society. Herman also served as President of the Chesaning High School graduating class of 1955. It was also at Chesaning High School where Herman met the love of his life, Norma Gillis. Herman and Norma were married on June 20, 1959, at Christ Lutheran Church in Brady, MI. Herman attended Michigan State University (GO GREEN!). He was a member in the ROTC program and later enlisted in the United States Army Reserves. He was honorably discharged on May 3, 1963. In the mid 1960's, Herman began working for the Miller-Davis Company where he was employed for over 30 years prior to his retirement. He held several positions in the company from being a timekeeper in the early years of his employment to becoming a vice president. In August 1968, Herman and his family relocated from East Lansing, MI to Portage, MI. Herman and the family attended St. James Evangelical Lutheran Church. He was active in the church serving in various capacities on the church council and being the chairman of the building committee for construction of the sanctuary and a later addition to the facility. Herman enjoyed playing golf, bowling, and being a member of the St. James softball team. Herman enjoyed time with his family. He was especially proud of his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He spent some time on woodworking projects and enjoyed restoring tractors that were used on the farm. His favorite tractor was the Allis-Chalmers WD-45 used on the farm by him and his father. Herman was preceded in death by his wife, Norma J. (Gillis) Weissmann; parents; and brother-in-law, James Weigold. He is survived by his children, John (Ilona) Weissmann, Sharon (Matt) Houseman, Richard (Tricia) Weissmann, and Karl (Sharon) Weissmann; 17 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; and sister, Katherine E. Weissmann-Weigold. Visitation will be from 4-7 pm, Thursday, June 23, 2022, at Langeland Family Funeral Homes Burial & Cremation Services, 411 E Centre Ave, Portage MI 49002. Services will be held 11:30am Friday, June 24, 2022, at St. James Evangelical Lutheran Church, 2381 Romence Rd, Portage MI 49024. The family will greet guests beginning at 10:30 am and again following the service. Graveside services will be held at 1 pm in Mt. Ever-Rest Memorial Park, South.
