Herbert "Herb" Duval Smith, age 86, of Portage, MI passed away peacefully at Rose Arbor Hospice on Monday, Oct. 17, 2016. Born on Dec. 14, 1929 in Collinsville, IL, he was the son of Pressnall and Bernetta (Duval) Smith. Herb graduated from Earlham College in Richmond, IN, and earned an MBA from Indiana University. He then served his country in the United States Army. After 21 years with the State of Michigan, Herb retired from the Department of Mental Health. He was an avid college sports fan and especially loved IU football and basketball. Herb was a longtime, active member of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church. A gentle man and a gentleman, Herb was a devoted and loving husband, father and grandfather, who delighted in being with his family (Hello Good People!). Herb is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Annette (Placke) Smith; five children and their spouses: Bruce and Jane Smith, Sue and Bill Baker, Nancy and Barry Gombert, Karen and Patrick Shaughnessy, Craig and Ellen Smith; seven grandchildren: Madeline and Martin Baker, Carolyn, Elizabeth and George Gombert, Carter and Lauren Smith. He was preceded in death by one brother, Larry F. Smith, M.D. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 21 at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, 1747 W. Milham Ave., with Pastor Tom Pederson officiating. The family will greet friends from 10-11 a.m. with the service following. Private interment will take place in Portage South Cemetery. Memorials in Herb's name may be made to Prince of Peace Lutheran Church or Hospice Care of Southwest Michigan. Arrangements by Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Memorial Chapel.
