87, of Mattawan, MI, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on July 24, 2019, in Mattawan, MI. He was born April 20, 1932 in Kalamazoo, MI, son of Roy and Mildred Whipple. Gerald attended Mattawan High School. Upon graduating in 1951, he joined the United States Navy where he served faithfully until 1955. During his time in the service he married the love of his life, Barbara J. Weed. They started in Massachusetts and upon his discharge, found themselves in Kalamazoo then at Maple Lake and now their home in Mattawan. He worked for 43 years as a machinist for National Waterlift until his retirement. A lifelong Detroit Lions and Tigers fan; Gerald liked all kinds of sports, from football to bowling league, depending on what season was in. He enjoyed playing and participating, first as a young man through high school and then with his kids. He was an avid hunter, fisherman, and golfer. At 60 he took up downhill skiing and took many trips to various resorts. Above all else was Gerald's family. He loved spending time with them and doting on his Grandchildren and Great Grandchildren. Surviving are his loving Wife of nearly 66 years, Barbara Whipple, Sons, Scott (Debbie) Whipple and Steve (Jenny) Whipple, Son-in-law, Tom Whitaker, Nine Grandchildren, Eight Great-Grandchildren, his beloved dog, Cash, and a host of other loving family and friends. Gerald was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Joyce, his eldest son, Sid Whipple, and his only daughter, Debra Whitaker. Friends will be received at Adams Funeral Home, 502 W. Michigan Ave., on Wednesday, July 31, 2019, from 3:00p.m. until the time of service at 4:00p.m. with Pastor David Small Officiating. A private Internment will take place in Almena Cemetery.
